Well, it takes a lot to shock me.
And what I saw via the medium of social media, and already being retweeted across the blogosphere did.
Amazon.co.uk in their wisdom appear to have allowed a private retailer to hawk their wares with titles such as Keep Calm and Rape on, Keep Calm and Rape Me, you get the picture.
I just wonder – what the bloody hell do they think they are playing at? Isn’t there some sort of vetting of products to determine whether they are appropriate? This particular “clothing range” if you can call it that, can be found in the ‘novelty’ clothing section of the site.
I wonder what their response will be – I don’t see how anyone can possibly find that acceptable, or funny at all. Is there some really twisted joke I am missing out on? It is hard enough for Women (and some men) especially to report a crime of this nature without the prospect of the word rape being legitimised through this sort of nonsense. According to an article by the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2013/jan/11/male-female-rape-statistics-graphic) one in five (that’s right ONE in FIVE) has been the victim of an attempted or actual sexual offence. This is a shocking statistic, and a grisly reminder of why we cannot let this sort of casual attitude towards using the word ‘rape’ stand. The human cost is too great.
For those who have been affected by the serious nature of this blog post please remember there are charities around like Rape Crisis (www.rapecrisis.org.uk) or the Samaritans (samaritans.org) who can lend a listening ear.
